  1. Full Body Digital Skin Exam: This proactive monitoring program is designed to assess and track the health of your skin from head to toe on a yearly basis. The exam focuses on identifying and evaluating a wide range of key skin conditions, including skin cancer, precancerous lesions, and other abnormalities, such as atypical moles, sun damage, or chronic skin disorders. During the exam, we conduct a thorough examination of your skin, utilizing advanced diagnostic tools like a dermoscope, which provides a magnified and detailed view of the skin’s structure. Besides skin cancer, the Annual Full Body Skin Exam can also identify a variety of other skin conditions that may require attention or treatment. These conditions can include actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis, acne and acne scarring, eczema, psoriasis, rosacea, dermatitis, and benign tumors.
  1. Sequential Digital Mole Mapping: This is an advanced diagnostic monitoring program that uses high-resolution microscopic total body photography to capture detailed images of moles and other skin features. Over time, these baseline images are compared to images taken during follow-up appointments to identify any changes—such as new growth, color alteration, or the development of irregular borders—which may indicate early signs of skin cancer. Digital Mole Mapping is especially valuable for individuals with a high risk for skin cancer and numerous or atypical moles, since it provides a reliable baseline for monitoring skin health and enables early detection of potentially serious skin conditions.
  1. Targeted Digital Dermoscopic Analysis: This is a comprehensive screening method designed specifically for individuals with an increased risk of developing skin cancer. This specialized program involves an in-depth examination of the skin using state-of-the art high-definition dermoscopy, a technique that allows us to observe the skin with the highest possible magnification and enhanced lighting. This method provides a clearer view of the skin’s patterns and structures, aiding in the early detection of skin cancer and other skin conditions. By systematically assessing the entire body, Total Body Dermoscopy is an effective approach to monitor changes over time and catch potential skin cancers and other issues at an earlier, more treatable stage.
  • Early Detection: Mole mapping identifies melanocytic skin cancer earlier than standard dermatological exams.
  • Fewer Biopsies: The mapping strategy reduces unnecessary biopsies and scars by the timely pinpointing of suspicious moles.
  • Peace of Mind: Mole mapping provides an effective, non-invasive, thorough screening, especially for individuals at high risk of skin cancer.

Elkhorn Dermatology's Advanced Digital Skin Cancer Exam and Mole Mapping

At Elkhorn Dermatology, we are committed to delivering the highest standard of care to our community through substantial investment in cutting-edge technology. Our state-of-the-art FotoFinder Automated Total Body Mapping (ATBM) Master system integrates total body photography, high-resolution video dermoscopy, laser-guided imaging, and advanced artificial intelligence. This technology refines the “two-step method of digital follow-up” and enhances our ability to detect adverse skin changes—including possible signs of skin cancer—as early as possible. By leveraging these innovative tools, our practice takes total body skin checks to the next level, enabling the precise detection of new or evolving skin lesions with accuracy far beyond the human eye.

Whole Body Documentation: We methodically document your entire skin surface and individual lesions, enabling us to monitor even the most subtle changes over time, helping us detect skin cancer and other concerns.

Mole Mapping: We create a detailed image database of your moles, recording each mole’s exact location and characteristics. This ensures that changes suggesting potential skin cancer are never overlooked.

Comparative Analysis: Our FotoFinder AI system facilitates the side-by-side comparison of initial baseline images with those taken during follow-ups, allowing for precise monitoring and early detection of any changes that could indicate skin cancer.

“Experiencing the impact of skin cancer within my own family is what inspired me to specialize in dermatology with a strong focus on the early detection and prevention of skin cancer.”

Digital Skin Exam

For individuals who are not at high risk for melanoma, digital mole mapping should be performed every 6 to 12 months. If you are at high risk of melanocytic skin cancer, your first session should occur 4 months after the baseline, followed by every 6 months or earlier if changes are observed.

Yes. If you have moles under your underwear that you would like to be mapped, please inform your provider upon arrival at your appointment.

Children are not permitted, but you may bring an adult chaperone.

You will undress to your comfort level and stand before the FotoFinder camera. Initially, full body photographs are taken, followed by a thorough examination using a handheld dermatoscope. Any moles requiring closer inspection will be marked for additional closeup photographs.

You will be contacted within 24 hours for any atypical findings, including possible skin cancer. Additional testing—such as a biopsy, if necessary—will be scheduled for a future visit.

Digital mole mapping should not be performed on skin with rashes, sunburn, or significant tan lines, as these can affect the software’s capability to accurately assess the skin.

Yes, full body skin exams are necessary even if you undergo digital mole mapping. Regular skin exams remain crucial in the fight against skin cancer.
