Your skin’s health is Elkhorn Dermatology’s top priority. Our team is grounded in the belief that prevention is the cornerstone of superior healthcare, so we emphasize a proactive approach to maintaining lifelong health. This involves educating patients about their risk factors and giving them life-saving knowledge. As part of our specialized services, we are also dedicated to conducting comprehensive skin cancer screenings, which can further locate and identify precancerous lesions, various benign growths, and chronic skin conditions. When it comes to detecting skin cancer, Omaha’s Elkhorn Dermatology advocates for all of our patients to undergo annual skin screenings, underscoring our unwavering commitment to your long-term dermatological health and well-being.
Skin cancer, including basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), and melanoma, is among the most common cancers worldwide. Understanding your risk factors can significantly improve prevention, early detection, and treatment outcomes. At Elkhorn Dermatology, we emphasize patient education to empower proactive care. Early detection leads to less-invasive treatments, better survival rates, reduced emotional stress, and preserved functionality in critical areas like the face and hands. By addressing risk factors, improving follow-up care, and adopting preventative measures (e.g., reducing UV exposure), you can lower recurrence rates and avoid complex treatments like chemotherapy. Early intervention also minimizes medical costs and hospital stays. Our personalized, patient-focused approach ensures better skin health, enhanced treatment success, and improved quality of life. At Elkhorn Dermatology, we are committed to delivering the highest standard of care to our community through substantial investment in cutting-edge technology. Our state-of-the-art FotoFinder Automated Total Body Mapping (ATBM) Master system integrates total body photography, high-resolution video dermoscopy, laser-guided imaging, and advanced artificial intelligence. This technology refines the “two-step method of digital follow-up” and enhances our ability to detect adverse skin changes—including possible signs of skin cancer—as early as possible. By leveraging these innovative tools, our practice takes total body skin checks to the next level, enabling the precise detection of new or evolving skin lesions with accuracy far beyond the human eye.

Whole Body Documentation: We methodically document your entire skin surface and individual lesions, enabling us to monitor even the most subtle changes over time, helping us detect skin cancer and other concerns.
Mole Mapping: We create a detailed image database of your moles, recording each mole’s exact location and characteristics. This ensures that changes suggesting potential skin cancer are never overlooked.
Comparative Analysis: Our FotoFinder AI system facilitates the side-by-side comparison of initial baseline images with those taken during follow-ups, allowing for precise monitoring and early detection of any changes that could indicate skin cancer.
“Experiencing the impact of skin cancer within my own family is what inspired me to specialize in dermatology with a strong focus on the early detection and prevention of skin cancer.”

For individuals who are not at high risk for melanoma, digital mole mapping should be performed every 6 to 12 months. If you are at high risk of melanocytic skin cancer, your first session should occur 4 months after the baseline, followed by every 6 months or earlier if changes are observed.
Yes. If you have moles under your underwear that you would like to be mapped, please inform your provider upon arrival at your appointment.
Children are not permitted, but you may bring an adult chaperone.
You will undress to your comfort level and stand before the FotoFinder camera. Initially, full body photographs are taken, followed by a thorough examination using a handheld dermatoscope. Any moles requiring closer inspection will be marked for additional closeup photographs.
You will be contacted within 24 hours for any atypical findings, including possible skin cancer. Additional testing—such as a biopsy, if necessary—will be scheduled for a future visit.
Digital mole mapping should not be performed on skin with rashes, sunburn, or significant tan lines, as these can affect the software’s capability to accurately assess the skin.
Yes, full body skin exams are necessary even if you undergo digital mole mapping. Regular skin exams remain crucial in the fight against skin cancer.
